How a Custom Cookbook Project Comes Together
What to expect from your first conversation to the day you hold your finished cookbook.
What to expect from your first conversation to the day you hold your finished cookbook.
Every cookbook has its own story.
No two cookbook projects follow exactly the same path. A family history cookbook has different needs than a luxury client gift or a cookbook that's both a souvenir and a travel guide.
Still, most successful projects move through the same major milestones. Here's what you can expect as your cookbook takes shape.
1. Discovery & Vision
Every great cookbook begins with a conversation.
Before recipes are collected or photographs are taken, we spend time understanding your goals.
Together, we'll explore questions like:
Who is this cookbook for?
What story are you trying to tell?
How will the book be used?
What does success look like?
This phase creates the roadmap for everything that follows.
Milestone: Project vision approved.
2. Gathering the Ingredients
Now the real treasure hunt begins.
This is where we begin collecting the ingredients that make your cookbook uniquely yours.
Depending on the project, this may include:
recipes
family stories
founder interviews
historical photographs
brand history
entertaining tips
contributor information
One of the biggest surprises for clients is discovering that gathering stories often takes longer than gathering recipes—and usually becomes everyone's favorite part of the project.
Milestone: Content collection complete.
3. Writing & Shaping the Story
With your content collected, we begin turning information into a book.
Recipes are edited for consistency and clarity. Interviews become engaging stories. Chapters begin to take shape. Every piece is written with your audience in mind.
During this stage, you'll review drafts, answer questions, and help ensure every detail accurately reflects your organization.
Milestone: Manuscript approved.
4. Design & Photography
This is when everything begins to feel real.
Typography, color palettes, photography, chapter openings, page layouts, and cover concepts all come together to create the experience you envisioned during our first conversations.
A cookbook isn't simply read—it's held, displayed, shared, and remembered. Thoughtful design helps communicate your story before a single word is read.
Milestone: Final design approved.
5. Proofing & Production
Before files are sent to press, every page is reviewed carefully.
Recipes are checked one final time. Images are verified. Proofs are reviewed. Small adjustments are made until everyone is confident the book is ready.
Taking time during this phase helps prevent expensive mistakes later.
Milestone: Files approved for printing and distribution.
6. Printing & Delivery
Once your files are approved, they're sent to the printer for production.
Depending on your project, books may be printed domestically or internationally and shipped directly to your organization.
There's nothing quite like opening the first box and holding your finished cookbook for the first time.
Milestone: Books delivered and your book is available for purchase online.
7. Sharing Your Story
For many organizations, publication is just the beginning.
Your cookbook may become:
a client gift
a fundraising tool
a commemorative anniversary book
a hospitality piece
an employee recognition gift
a family keepsake
a retail product
a travel guide
Some clients host launch events. Others quietly begin giving books to new clients or incorporating them into their marketing. However you choose to share it, your cookbook becomes another way to strengthen relationships and tell your story.
Milestone: Your cookbook begins its next chapter.
Before You Begin
Every project is unique, and timelines vary depending on the scope of the book, the availability of recipes and photographs, and the review process.
One thing doesn't change: The strongest cookbook projects begin with clear communication, thoughtful planning, and a shared vision.
If you're considering a custom cookbook and would like to learn more about the process, we'd be happy to answer your questions and help you determine whether the project is the right fit for your organization.
